It’s a small world after all

Exhibitors love aftermarket trade shows like Automechanika because it allows them to do six months worth of meetings in just a few days.

Journalists love it too because it allows us to catch up with so many companies with the same purpose in mind, good business.

Walking through one of the many Frankfurt halls today I’ve already seen deals being struck and new customers being made. It is great to see the aftermarket selling itself so well.

At the same time I’m still astounded at the sheer size of the show. It’s just taken me half an hour to get from a stand in Hall 6 to the press centre to post this.

The CAT team is spread out all over the show at the moment hunting for the stories that we know will be of interest to the UK trade, and we’ll be reporting on those stories in the next issue of CAT. Watch this space for more.

How to build a garage in twenty minutes

LEGO BOSCH 3See that? We built that, we did.

We think you’ll agree the finished product looks excellent, and there’s a chance for you to own one too.

These models are all part of a competition being run by Bosch. It’s a colouring competition for children between five and ten, and the winner will receive this self-build model of a Bosch Car Service garage.

All you have to do to enter is download the picture of the Bosch Car Service garage, colour it in, scan it and send it back to before the closing date of September 30th.

Never has the CAT team become so enthralled over model-making – and it only took twenty minutes to complete. It definitely didn’t take all afternoon and lots of swearing, nope, not a bit of it.

Good luck!

Help CAT give Harry Adams the chance of a lifetime

Harry Adams is a budding engineering genius. He’s exactly the sort of person the motor trade needs – passionate, talented and dedicated to his work.

At just 16 Harry is already well on the road to success, winning several prestigious industry awards (the latest being the Painter Stainer award) and being the lucky recipient of an Arkright engineering scholarship.

But there’s a problem. While Harry has been sent confirmation that he has the scholarship, Arkright has as yet been unable to find him a sponsor. Usually each scholarship winner will be matched with an industry partner – which provides mentoring, work experience, and most importantly shoulders some of the financial burden for the course. This is set at approximately £1000 every year for two years.

Make no mistake, Arkright graduates are among the best in the industry. Nurtured and taught by market-leading experts they are truly the engineering leaders of tomorrow.

Time is running out to find Harry a sponsor, the closing date is the 31st August.

Please, if you can help get in touch with CAT and we’ll point you in the right direction. Email or call 020 8267 5927.

Tetrosyl’s underground batcave

A rumour is a powerful tool, and rumours were already circulating that it was Tetrosyl who had stumped up for the MotorMania chain when I went to see the company last week.

We now know of course that those rumours were true, and not for the first time I find myself wondering if the aftermarket grapevine – given its success and accuracy scores in recent months – shouldn’t turn its attention to predicting Euro 2012 scores as well as business moves.

Tetrosyl’s Bury HQ doesn’t look out of place among the other industrial units alongside it. Until, that is, you see what the company has got stashed away underground.

Beyond the wood-paneled boardroom and movie memorabilia (who knew Tetrosyl had appeared in so many films? Everything from the Fast and the Furious Franchise to the latest Men in Black) lies an underground labyrinth of the company’s products.

T-Cut in every shade imaginable, exotic shampoos and metal polishes stock shelf after shelf of this car-care dream. Every brand the Tetrosyl group owns is found down here, and it’s quite a sight.

The company could quite easily install a cash register in the cave and set itself up as the UK’s first underground car accessory retailer.

Now there’s a thought…

Flying the flag for the aftermarket in Cyprus

The small island of Cyprus has much to offer. Sun, sea, sand, and decent beer are just a few of its qualities. It also seems to have a thriving independent automotive aftermarket too, if the abundance of back-street garages are anything to go by.

On a recent holiday to the island (if you tried emailing me last week and I didn’t reply, you now know why) I got the opportunity to see a few of these workshops first hand.

On first appearances at least, they might not look like much.

However, despite appearances these workshops are overflowing with business. The main reason for this, at least from what I could decipher, is that while there are many independent workshops on the island there are very few franchised dealers to capitalise on business. A quick look on Cypriot directory websites like Auto in Cyprus reveals that nearly all of the garages listed are independents.

Speaking to locals it seems that while there is also nowhere else to turn, motorists enjoy the service and relationship they get from an independent technician.

It’s always nice to see the independent sector thriving abroad. However there are very few garages on the island catering for the ever-growing ex-pat community. Relocation, anyone?
