DVLA SHOULD CLOSE ‘IMMEDIATELY’ SAY UNION

The DVLA in Swansea should close ‘temporarily and immediately’ according to the PCS union.

Pressure to close the executive agency comes as more than coronavirus infections have been reported at the Swansea office. The union has criticised DVSA bosses for not providing the necessary kit to enable home working for the majority of employees.

“At DVLA in Swansea we have dozens and dozens of Covid cases and yet ridiculously ministers and management still insist that the DVLA remains open. Sending thousands of people into work, putting them at risk is irresponsible. In the court service it seems that people are being put at risk more than anywhere else so we’re calling for all courts to close immediately and for our members to work safely at home” PCS said in a statement.

Welsh first Minister Mark Drayford concurs with the union, pointing out that the rules in Wales stipulate that staff must work from home wherever possible.

Mr Drakeford told a BBC reporter that the Welsh Government had heard from staff, and that he was “anxious to make sure that the UK government understood that if you are working in Wales, it is the Welsh rules that you have to obey”.
