The biggest supplier of auxiliary belt drive systems (ABDS) and synchronous drive belt system to workshops was Stoke-on-Trent’s A-Z Motor Spares.
Director of A-Z Mohammed Nadeem puts the large number of sales down to its clear sales and communication policy, which outlines the installation benefit to garages and has helped drive sales of timing belt kits and water pumps across its six branches in Stoke, Stafford, Birmingham, Wakefield and Dewsbury.
He adds: “If a garage wants an ABDS belt and tensioner, our sales team make it clear that there are several Gates kits that include them, but they also point out that these kits don’t just save time, they add value to a job.”
Although concerns about the increasing costs of repairs are justified he says, workshops should focus on what is best for the customer and appropriate for the vehicle.
“Garages know that fitting a new timing belt kit, but leaving the old water pump in place with a dodgy pulley, could come back to bite them,” says Nadeem. “So will ignoring the torsional vibration damper or the overrunning alternator pulley in ABDS.
“Our customers appreciate that we only supply parts that we know won’t let them down. We only sell Gates drive system products and the strength of the brand adds weight to that. It also supports the advice we are giving to them over the counter.”
