Some versions of Vauxhall’s popular Insignia have been known to suffer with braking issues such as cracked discs and complaints from drivers of judder and vibration through the steering wheel when they are braking.
In the case of excessive vibration, the free movement of the brake pads must be checked because the vibration can be caused by the brake pads being seized in the calipers, which will also cause overheating.
If the pads are found to be sticking then they should be removed and the lateral guides of the calipers must be cleaned. The guides should then be lubricated with specialist lubricant.
However, it is very important to make sure that the friction surfaces are not contaminated with the lubricant when fitting new brake pads or, if appropriate, refitting the existing pads.
The discs should also be checked for their lateral run-out. If the manufacturers maximum allowable run-out taken with the road wheel attached is exceeded, then the vehicle will need to have its discs replaced.
