Extra Mile Award winner: Phil Dowd

Phil Dowd is the winner of this year’s Extra Mile award. Due to his tireless work to get a nationwide network of  fuel system cleaning machines up and running on behalf of parent company Randstad.

The aftermarket faced a sustained period of consumers pulling back from excessive spending on new cars but also on servicing and repair. Despite this, there was the belief that an opportunity existed to create a brand that could offer independent garages an alternative revenue stream and a network that maintains close communication.

In addition, Dowd promoted the brand and raised money for charity by entering an old London taxi on to a banger run to Nice during which he, along with several other members of his team, raised £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Speaking about receiving the award, Dowd noted that he was a ‘bit shocked’ as he was there just to support some of the Terraclean operators. It was a genuine surprise.

Building the network has involved a great deal of out-of-hours work and pep talks for the members. “The Terraclean network is like a big family, so you have to be there all hours of the day and night. I get phone calls from customers at 10pm some nights and if they need help, you do it. It’s nice to be recognised for that.”
