RMI OPENS NEW ACADEMY IN RUNCORN

Runcorn academy opens on 3rd July

The Retail Motoring Industry Federation (RMIF) has announced the launch of its MOT training facility in Runcorn, Cheshire.

The new 7,000 sq ft. warehouse follows a similar set-up to the Southam site in Warwickshire, but includes a larger workshop space allowing delegates to carry out MOT Tester training before completing the final test on their work premises. In addition, this is supported by two MOT bays for class four and seven vehicles, a dedicated service ramp and three classrooms catering for industry events and seminar programmes.

Speaking of the launch, Stuart James, Independent Garages Director at the RMI, said. “We decided to open an academy in Runcorn because of the significant number of businesses around the area”. He continued. “Delegates at our latest facility can expect new MOT Tester training for classes four and seven vehicles. We are also doing Level 1 and 2 Motorcycle and a Pre-Mot Testing Level 3 course to support individuals who want to become MOT testers or become eligible to go onto the course”.

The federation will integrate the Independent Garage Association’s training infrastructure, with the inclusion of new courses starting later this year. RMI’s Stuart James provided further insight. “One thing we’re doing in the near future is launching the IGA’s new training regime where we will have a suite of new on-site courses. The newest addition is the ‘Oscilloscope course pilot’, which we have run and will be coming out soon”, adding that the firm’s next course catalogue will be available to the trade next month.

Although there have been discussions of opening an academy in Basingstoke, the team are focusing on getting the Runcorn facility up and running at full capacity before tackling their next project. The site is available to both members and non-members of the RMI.

GARAGE PROGRAMME INTRODUCES FINANCIAL GUARANTEE

Trust My Garage webThe RMI is introducing a guarantee to motorists that have work done at any member garage, provided that member is part of its ‘Trust My Garage’ scheme.

Terry Gibson, Head of Member Services commented: “In the event of a dispute where the consumer is judged to be in the right by TMG’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider, the National Conciliation Service, the IGA will guarantee payment of any financial award up to £1,000 where the garage is unable to meet its obligation to the consumer”.

TMG is regognised as an ‘approved consumer code’ by Chartered Trading Standards Institute.

The new guarantee is effective immediately . Further details of the scheme and the conditions that apply can be found on the TMG website.

The garage scheme currently has 2,800 members. Each new applicant is put through a site audit which it must pass in order to be able to display the TMG logo.

CLOCKING STORY GETS INDUSTRY REACTION

CLOCKING STORY GETS INDUSTRY REACTION

Mileage correctionA newspaper has carried out an investigation into so-called ‘mileage correction’ companies. The Sun paid half a dozen companies around the country to reduce the mileage on vehicles. Each firm had a disclaimer that mileage correction could not be used for profit, but all agreed to change the odometer on an ‘ask no questions, tell no lies’ basis.

The investigation pleased Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association “We are encouraged to see that The Sun has carried out an investigation into companies offering odometer adjustment services” she said, adding that an EU proposal to outlaw such companies ‘does not do enough’ to combat the issue.

However, there is a fear that tight regulation will do noting to deter criminals and make work harder for technicians and could be used by VMs as a way for VMs to excuse ‘locking out’ the independent sector.

One commenter on the newspaper’s website observed: “A car’s dashboard reading should never be trusted. A buyer should always ask to see the service history, stamped service book, service, repairs and tyre invoices and all MOT certificates”.

Interestingly, it is franchised dealers that have the most to gain from a ban. It is believed that the fastest growing area for mileage fraud is nearly new vehicles on lease hire schemes, where the keeper can be fined up to 50p per mile over the agreed mileage.

RMI HAILS SECURITY INFO SCHEME

RMI HAILS SECURITY INFO SCHEME

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has hailed the new SERMI (Security related Repair and Maintenance Information) scheme as a ‘significant step towards having a level playing field for accessing security manufacturer information;’ calling it a ‘victory’ for its membership.

The SERMI scheme means that independent garages are another step closer towards accessing Manufacturer Security Information. It has been set up to develop, operate and maintain a process which forms a part of the ISO standard for repair information. The scheme sets out the rules and requirements for independent operators who can demonstrate the necessary integrity to be granted access to security related info.

RMI Standards and Certification says it is positioned to be the first organisation in Europe to accredit against this standard, which will keep the UK independent sector competitive and ensure that consumers and fleet operators do not have to make any compromises when choosing an independent garage for service and repair.

Stuart James, IGA Director, who has long been fighting for the rights of independent garages to access manufacturer technical information, called SERMI a huge step forward for the IGA and its members. “The ability to access manufacturer security information takes us ever closer to the ‘level playing field’ promised by EU legislation, and I am delighted that there has been a giant leap towards achieving it,” he said.
