HALFORDS ACQUIRES UNIVERSAL TYRES FOR £15m

Halfords has announced the acquisition of Universal Tyre and Autocentres, a long established motoring services provider in the South East of the UK, for £15m.

Based in Kent with 20 garages and 89 commercial vans operating in the South East and on the east coast of the UK, Universal Tyre offers the usual range of fast fit services, including MOT tests. However, unlike many of its competitors, the firm offers services for heavy commercial and agricultural vehicles.

Halfords has a stated ambition to reach 550 garages in the UK and has been growing through acquisition, following the purchase of the McConechy’s garage chain and online retailer Tyres on the Drive in 2019.   The new acquisition brings the total to 374 garages and 136 mobile expert vans.

Graham Stapleton, Chief Executive Officer, commented: “We continue to see strong demand for our Autocentres, for our expanding fleet of Halfords Mobile Expert vans, and for our growing commercial business. Universal will help us to meet that demand whilst also expanding our geographic footprint in a market for which we see significant potential.”
