Jason Plato is backing Unipart Automotive’s new Apprentice Scheme for Unipart Car Care Centres, which will start in September.
The former British Touring Car Championship champion – sponsored by Unipart in 2009 – said he relies on the work of well-trained mechanics throughout the racing season.
“I’m delighted to be working with Unipart this season, and I totally endorse the work they are doing to push the importance of continuous training in the industry,†said Plato.
“Without the backing of engineers and mechanics who really know what they’re doing, I couldn’t race with the confidence that I do today.
“Equally, I wouldn’t take my own car to a garage without knowing that the people working on my car have the relevant training.
“Garages must realise that it’s important to earn and keep the trust of motorists by ensuring they have the qualified staff to do the job.â€
Wendy Williamson, marketing director, Unipart Automotive, added: “When times are hard, it’s tempting to cut back on training budgets but this often proves to be a false economy.
“By continuing their commitment to training and high standards, garages can keep up to date with the latest technology and earn consumer trust, bringing in more customers.
“Apprenticeships are just one way for garages to show this commitment.â€
