Lubricant manufacturer Chevron is urging customers to check “what lies beneath” their bonnets this spring, especially if they are planning a lengthy trip.

As millions of motorists take to the roads for a spring getaways, the company is hoping that drivers will take the proper precautions before taking to the tarmac. Those precautions include checking fluid levels in the vehicle.

Chevron is telling customers to make sure that oil is topped up to the correct levels to avoid undue complications like overheating once on the road.

In 2009 research by CCB FastMAP revealed that 60 percent of motorists either have never checked their own oil between service intervals, or only chose to check at one or two points during the year.

The company is worried that irregular checks could lead to undue stress being placed on an engine this spring.

Brian Hayes, marketing manage for Chevron said: “Oil levels should be checked regularly, but because lubricants are often a distress purchase, many choose to ignore it and keep their fingers crossed that they will arrive at their destination without incurring any problems. It doesn’t take long to check the fluid levels under the bonnet, and this could make all the difference.”
