Garages to show off green credentials with new scheme

by

Responsible retailerA new initiative to help garages demonstrate their green credentials has been launched by the Tyre Recovery Association.

The Responsible Retailer program will reward those garages and tyre retailers who manage their used tyre disposals in line with industry rules with signage which can help them promote to customers.

The association says the promotion of environmental awareness from retailers as been a neglected area in the past. President Mike Wilson said: “In the UK we generate some 40 million used car and van tyres each year which need to be recycled in a responsible manner.

“The industry has already developed robust and effective practices to handle these and we now need to concentrate our efforts and encourage retailers to act responsibly as well.”

Workshops and retailers singing up to the scheme will receive annual certification and a range of educational materials. A website has also been launched to help the project which retailers can also use to sign up.

The scheme is being supported by both Motor Codes and the IGA’s Trust My Garage scheme. The Environment Agency has also been involved in the project.
