Lucas Oils says there is often confusion about the correct oil specification suitable for early and late models in this series.
Up until about ten years ago, engines fitted to the Audi A1 series used a 5w30, fully synthetic oil. Models manufactured from about the middle of the decade were switched to a 0W30, fully synthetic specification, which was part of a trend seen among several high volume vehicle manufacturers at that time.
By the end of the decade, engines in the A1 series had begun to migrate back, once more, towards the use of a 5w30 fully synthetic specification. This was part of a general reverse trend also shared by other vehicle manufacturers.
Although the 5w30 is regarded as a much more superior fully synthetic oil than the 0w30, correct oil specification is critical for these high performance engines. With this series in particular, the date of vehicle registration is critical in determining the most appropriate oil for each specification. The belief that ‘all A1s usually use 5w30’ is not necessarily the case.
