Inside Line: Castrol

by

The BMW E81/87 1-Series (2004-2011) replaced the BMW 3-Series in 2004 as the smallest and cheapest vehicle (depending on the engine model) in the BMW range. BMW introduced a smaller capacity 1.6-litre petrol engine for the 1-Series, alongside the 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines.

Castrol points out that every engine in the E81/E87 1-Series range* was designed to run on fully-synthetic, low viscosity Castrol EDGE 0W-30 engine oil, the only oil actively recommended by BMW. The oil filler cap even acknowledges as much, serving as a reminder to motorists and workshops which lubricant BMW points out is best for the car. EfficientDynamics versions of the 1-Series – available from 2007 onwards –specifically rely on the recommended Castrol EDGE 0W-30 formulation to meet its claimed fuel economy figures.

It’s important that vehicle technicians top-up these vehicles with the correct oil formulation. Any lubricant lacking the relevant BMW Longlife-04 approval may invalidate any remaining manufacturer warranty, and may reduce the efficiency, performance and longevity of the engine.

BMW recommends oil change intervals of 15,000 miles, though these intervals may vary according to driving conditions. Workshops should consider offering customers a one-litre bottle of the BMW-recommended Castrol EDGE 0W-30 oil, in case the motorist needs to top-up their car’s oil between workshop visits. This can also help customer satisfaction and retention, as the workshop can demonstrate that they have their customers’ best interests at heart.
