The Alternator on the 3.0 TD6 (BMW Engined models) suffers from premature failure due to oil ingress, this causes the Alternator brushes to overheat and melt which in turn burn the copper on the slip rings, early signs of this type of failure are poor or erratic charge rate before resulting in total failure of the Alternator.
