Two common issues with the VW 2.0-litre TDI Pumpe Duse engine relate to the tensioner on the timing belt or Synchronous Drive Belt System (SBDS).

Unlike the latest engines, the Pumpe Duse engine is not a common rail engine.

If the technician fails to observe the correct torque setting ‘plus angle, the stud can be pulled away from the cylinder head. This reduces the clamping load and causes the stud to shear.

The recommended procedure refers to the Torque Plus Angle method and states that once seated, the bolt must be torqued through 45 degrees. Technicians often assume -incorrectly – that this equates to a quarter of a turn.

A quarter of a turn is 90 degrees.

The consequence is over-tightening of the belt and the inevitable result is premature failure of the SBDS.
