The SMMT and Motor Codes have launched a consumer-facing web portal to enable motorists to quickly find out if any recall notices have been issued against their vehicle.
The Vehicle Safety Recall Tool works by using the vehicle’s identification number to give users one place to find any recall notices attached to that car or van, and will be accessible via the Motor Codes website, although the data will be managed and funded by the SMMT.
The portal will also advise users on what to do if there are any recalls on their vehicle, although the tool could be very useful for technicians to check what recalls may be attached to the vehicle while it is on their ramp.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive at the SMMT, said: “The UK vehicle recall process is one of the most robust in the world, and manufacturers are constantly striving to make it even better. Essential recalls can be missed when a vehicle transfers between owners so this portal provides a fast way of checking any safety issues. Vehicle manufacturers are committed to delivering the highest standards of safety and record keeping, to ensure the UK’s excellent vehicle safety record is maintained.”
Mark Terry, Managing Director at Motor Codes, added: “We are committed to helping UK motorists identify if their car has an outstanding vehicle safety recall issue and enabling manufacturers to meet their obligations in rectifying these issues.”
