Workshops should explain why they need SWOBS, says IGA

The IGA is urging all independent workshops to write to their MPs in a bid to stop proposals to make the use of SWOBs illegal.

The IGA says the government is questioning whether the use of SWOBs is necessary considering the environmental impact they have.

While the Waste Incineration Directive that could have banned the use of SWOBs in workshops was overturned into 2000, MPs are now debating whether this decision needs reversing.

The IGA is therefore asking garages to write to MPs and state whey they need Small Waste Oil Burners, and the effects on their businesses should they be banned.

IGA Director Stuart James said: “A large number of Independent garages across the UK rely on SWOBs as a consistent way of heating their garages as well as disposing of their waste oil. If SWOBs were banned, already cash strapped garages could see a rise in their utility bills of an average of £5000. They would also have to arrange and pay for the professional removal and transport of the waste oil.

“The consultation provides the perfect opportunity for garage owners to speak out and be heard about this very important subject. It is imperative that garages contact their local MP to explain the detrimental effect a ban on SWOB’s would have on their business and other independent garages in the local area.”

The Garage Equipment Association says that alongside the IGA it is currently in talks with the Government on the subject, and that it wants to ensure its members best interests are represented.
