HOW TO WASH YOUR GLOVES AND FIGHT COVID-19

Work. Wash. Repeat.

As the UK’s new ‘Hands. Face. Space.’ campaign implies, clean hands are crucial in the fight against coronavirus. If you must go out or go to work during this unprecedented time, a mask and gloves can go a long way in preventing the spread of the virus. Frequently touched surfaces like door handles, tables, gas pumps, shopping carts, card readers, and our very own electronic devices, are hot spots for transmission.

Whether you’re an essential worker or you’re protecting yourself on-the-go, wearing gloves when coming in contact with high-touch surfaces can help prevent exposure to coronavirus. Gloves can also serve as a good mental stop gap in preventing you from touching your eyes, nose or mouth. According to the new ‘Hands. Face. Space.’ campaign, while coronavirus is not likely to survive for long periods of time on outdoor surfaces in sunlight, it can live for more than 24 hours in indoor environments (see endnote 1).

As we are expected to wash our hands, it’s important to routinely wash your gloves during the pandemic. Coronavirus is vulnerable to standard interventions like soap, water, bleach, UV light, and alcohol-based cleaners. So, how do you wash your gloves? Better yet, how do you wash synthetic gloves versus leather gloves, or nitrile coated knit gloves and insulated gloves? Rest assured, if you own a set of Mechanix Wear gloves, we’ve made washing them as easy as…

Synthetic Gloves

Our tried and true synthetic leather is one of our calling cards, along with our family of high-performance synthetics like Material4X, Ax-Suede, Armortex, and TrekDry. We recommend washing our synthetic gloves with household laundry detergent and warm water. Machine dry with low heat to prevent material shrinkage, or air dry your gloves to maintain long term material performance.

Coated Knit Gloves

Seamless coated gloves might cause you to hesitate before throwing them in the wash but rest easy knowing they are machine wash friendly and fast drying. We recommend washing our palm coated gloves with household laundry detergent and warm water. Machine dry with low heat to prevent material shrinkage, or air dry your gloves to maintain long term material performance.

Durahide™ Leather Gloves

Durahide performance leather is treated to be machine washable and resist water to prevent cracking or splitting like standard leather gloves. We recommend washing our Durahide leather gloves with household laundry detergent and cold water. We suggest air drying your gloves to maintain long term material performance, but you may also machine dry with low heat.

Insulated Gloves

Performance insulation like 3M Thinsulate and Primaloft utilise synthetic down to trap warm air and protect your hands. We recommend washing our insulated gloves with common laundry detergent and warm water. We suggest air drying your gloves to maintain long term material performance, but you may also machine dry with low heat.

Five Steps to Safe Glove Care

How to keep your gloves clean and effective against COVID-19.

  2. Wash your hands after extended glove use.
  3. Store your gloves in a safe place such as a washable or disposable bag.
  4. Launder or hand wash your gloves with household laundry detergent and warm water.
