DVSA figures show that the number of MOT tests carried out in the second quarter of 2021 were down by 32 percent compared with 2019 levels, despite traffic levels being roughly equivalent to pre-pandemic volumes and a record number of used vehicles changing hands.
The reason for the drop is a knock-on effect of last year’s MOT extension, which saw the number of tests plummet.
On the positive side, the number of tests conducted has increased by 45 percent or 1.7 million tests compared with last year’s extension period, which is a faster recovery than predicted.
The figures were gained by a FOI request by aggregator BookMyGarage.com. Founder Karen Rotberg noted:
“That means approximately half of the 3.4 million additional MOT tests that took place between September and December last year have already been conducted. So, while this autumn and winter will still be busier than normal for garages, we don’t expect it to be quite to the same extent as last year”.
