MOTORIST MOT ‘AWARENESS HIGH’ FOLLOWING LOCKDOWN

A YouGov poll conducted for the Motor Ombudsman has found that almost nine out of ten motorists now know the expiry date of their vehicle’s MOT, which the Ombudsman described as ‘an unexpected result of the MOT extension announced this time last year’.

The survey of 1,303 UK drivers who own a car that is three or more years of age showed that there was only a marginal regional and gender difference in MOT awareness, suggesting that the extension had focussed awareness on the vehicle’s test date regardless of the driver’s background.

However, the heightened awareness of the test does not seem to have translated into motorists actually taking the vehicle to the testing station.

A separate poll by Kwik Fit shows the number of drivers missing the MOT expiration date by more than three weeks has tripled in the last six months, compared to the same period in the previous year, although some have pointed out that this may be down to more vehicles having been laid up unused during the lockdown period.

Meanwhile a third poll by Halfords suggests that not only are more motorists missing the MOT due date, but are coming up with ever more creative excuses to justify why they are driving without a valid ticket.
