Following the story that three out of eight brake pad sets tested by DVSA had failed R90 tests, the government Authority has responded to CAT’s questions.
Despite there being a clear public interest in finding out what the affected brands are, DVSA would not be drawn, stating simply that it is “unable to disclose any information about manufacturers who are part of an ongoing investigation”.

However, it did clarify that the testing facility that it used is “independent from the manufacturer or suppliers of components” and that the instruction has been issued to remove the affected pads from sale.
The full statement reads as follows:
DVSA’s Market Surveillance Unit is independent from the manufacturer or suppliers of components. DVSA commissioned an independent facility which has the capability to carry out testing in line with Regulation 90 requirements. This testing is carried out without the knowledge of the manufacturer.
As the test carried out identified three different brake pads which were not compliant the relevant manufacturer has been contacted and the appropriate action taken. DVSA has issued instruction that these Brake pads should be removed from sale.
DVSA will continue to monitor to ensure the instruction has been carried out.
