Carrying on the Inside Line series, we move on from looking at fleet favourite Vauxhall Insignia and turn our attention to the BMW 1 Series. Now in its second generation, this car remains a firm favourite with those wanting an entry-level BMW.
In this issue we are focusing on the first generation 1 Series, BMW’s attempt to break into the hatchback market, and it was up against some stiff competition with the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Audi A3 among others all competing for a piece of the pie.
Unveiled in 2004 as the first rear-wheel drive medium hatchback, the 1 Series was an instant hit with drivers, before a small facelift in 2007 and eventual release of coupé and convertible versions.
The baby Beemer was launched with a good range of powerplants. Motorists could choose from 1.6-, 1.8-, 2.0- and 3.0-litre petrol engines and 1.6-, 1.8-, 2.0-, 2.3-litre diesel options. This wide variety of engine options and rear wheel drive construction have provided technicians with additional challenges.
