Carrying on the Inside Line series, we move on from the Mark IV Renault Espace and turn our focus towards a fleet favourite, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. With the fourth generation of the C-Class launched earlier this year, its underpinnings go back nearly 30 years to the development of the German manufacturer’s 190 range.
The C-Class has seen it battle it out since 1993 with the BMW 3-Series and the Audi A4 for traction in this luxury end of the market ever since.
The third gen Mercedes, which we are examining in this issue, was launched with a range of powerplants in various guises, which included 1.8-, 2.5-, 3.0- or 3.5-litre petrol engines and 2.2- and 3.0-litre diesel options, with a montrous 6.2-litre engine available for the AMG version. This variety of engine, its rear wheel drive set-up and the inclusion of more technology have provided some additional challenges.
